Get Your Electrical Home Inspection from Watts Electrical & Construction Services

Moving into a new home is one of the most exciting experiences you can have, but it can also be one of the most frustrating. Whether your home is a new construction or old, unexpected problems can emerge; this is especially true for the electrical system. You might not be able to predict what you’ll find, but you can prevent a catastrophe from eventually happening.

The certified electricians at Watts Electrical & Construction Services have many years of experience doing electrical home inspections. Their detail-oriented approach will catch any issues before they become a problem for you. They know that the stakes are high: a botched wiring system can cause electrical fires and ungrounded outlets can cause a short circuit in your home.

When Should You Get an Inspection?

You should have your electrical system inspected when you purchase a home—old or new. It’s important to be distrustful of contractors who might cut costs by doing a bad install. It’s never a bad idea to have your home inspected: the cost of a minor electrical repair is much less than the structural damage of a fire.

It’s also important if you’re adding a major appliance that draws a lot of electricity, such as refrigerators, dryers, and deep freezers. Major appliances require grounded outlets to protect the appliances and electrical system from power surges. A power surge can permanently damage your electrical system, costing you a lot of money.

It doesn’t hurt to have your electrical system inspected when you’ve completed a large-scale renovation project, because most electrical wiring is hidden behind walls. It’s difficult for the average person to tell whether damage has been done. Our certified electricians have the right tools and knowledge for troubleshooting electrical problems.

Out-Of-Date Electrical Systems

Homes that were built more than 40 years ago are special cases as they absolutely need to be inspected.

Back then, residential electrical systems used a fuse box to manage a home’s power. Fuse boxes used to work well when we used less power. Nowadays, with so many high-energy appliances a fuse box of 60-amps just won’t cut it. We recommend upgrading to a circuit breaker with 100-amps or more. It is safer, more efficient and more convenient; rather than blowing a fuse, the circuit breaker turns itself off. With the flip of a switch, your power’s back on!

The other problem with older homes is that they tend to have ungrounded outlets. This means that if you plug in a high voltage appliance, there’s a high risk of a power surge. In many cases, our licensed electricians have found three-holed outlet covers in pre-1980’s homes; however, when they checked what was behind the cover, they found that there was no ground after all. It’s a common trick that can leave you without power—or worse!
